New season, new start for the CBLTSC teams. On the men’s side the club maintain two split strength teams in Division 1 and two split strength teams in Division 2 with the Upstarts continuing to develop youngish talent in Division 3. The Upstarts will hope to push on from last season as Richard Harvey takes on the challenge of leading his team of veterans and rookies up towards the higher end of the D3 table. In D2, the Seniors and particularly the Mavericks had stellar seasons last year. Both sides have lost some players either to the D1 teams or through players leaving so it would be some achievement to match those achievements. Don’t write off the Mavericks though. The champions still have a very competitive squad and their spirit and team ethos seems to lift all of the players.
Division 1 seems to have become stronger this season, with more teams involved and also a greater depth of players across most of the teams. 1A and 1B by contrast have mainly lost players so it promises to be a tough season but one which will provide opportunities for some new players to experience D1 squash.
1B got their season underway at Beaconsfield on Wednesday night. The home team edged home with victories at 1, 2 and 4, but massive credit goes to both Andy and Will Piper for winning at 5 and 3 respectively. Both guys have joined the team this year from the Mavericks, and they seem to have brought some of that Maverick fire to 1B. In particular Will deserves special mention for winning his D1 debut match at 3. No easy task against an excellent Beaconsfield prospect. It will be a pleasure to watch the youngster’s matches this season and I’m sure he will take some big scalps.
