Letter from the 'Squash Chair'

June 2010

A few matters arising from our last Squash Committee meeting:

(1) After much discussion, it was reluctantly accepted that there would have to be a small increase in membership subscriptions next year. These subs have been held for 5 years, but with central costs rising and membership levels marginally down the new fees will be:

Full: £170 (last year £160),
Midweek/Senior/Young: £85 (last year £80),
Junior/Country: £33 (last year £30),
Social: £20 (last year £20).

The same early payment discounts will be offered, being £10 for full members and £5 for all other categories.

(2) Following a court inspection, it has been agreed that work will be undertaken in August to courts 1 and 4. Court 1 will simply have a wall clean and floor sand, but court 4 will also have a complete plaster overcoat to repair the settling crack on the left hand wall and generally tidy up the front wall.

(3) You will have seen that there is an EGM on 1st July where all club members are being asked to vote on the proposal to create two mini Tennis courts behind courts 10 and 11. I have been assured that the cost, of around £16,000, will be borne out of Tennis section funds and should not therefore impact on our squash section finances. Under the constitution a 90% vote in favour is required before the project can go ahead, so if you have any reservations do come to the meeting to hear the presentation and share your views before voting.

(4) Finally, the main Club Tournament drew more entries than ever and culminated in a new Club Champion. Congratulations to Mo Khalid, who gave us a master class in squash guile and also to Sam Mueller, who retained her Lady's title without dropping a game. The doubles event
saw our current champions Paul Bolden and Neil Hinds toppled by the new (ex Gerrards Cross) pairing of Stewart Hefferman and Jeremy Baker.
