Letter from the 'Squash Chair'

September 2010

Some points from our last Squash Committee meeting and a couple of updates:

(1) Final reminder - Membership Renewals. Thanks to more than 250 of you who have now renewed. To those that have not yet done so, please let us know if you don't intend to rejoin so that we can update our records accordingly.

(2) Court 3 lights are now working again - before the electrician actually got to the club! The court has therefore been released for booking again and the electrician will return next week to double check everything while new light tubes are fitted.

(3) On Court 4, I have met 3 surveyors and am awaiting 3 quotes to renew the glassback wall. A decision will be made in conjunction with our insurers as to how to then proceed.

(4) Only a week after a full clean and sanding of Court 1, it was disappointing to see considerable black markings on the floor and walls. We don't know who was responsible for this but I would ask all members to ensure both their own and their opponents racket/shoes are non-marking.

(5) Members voted 2 to 1 in favour of retaining the summer experiment on league promotion/relegation. Thus, subject to joiners/leavers, the winner of each league will be promoted two leagues, second place one league and the same will apply for relegation.

(6) The first club event of the season is the handicap tournament starting 24th September with finals on Sunday 3rd October. To enter, just e-mail Dominic dominicthwaites@mac.com or write your name on the entry sheet on the noticeboard.

(7) Finally, keep your diary free for our squash section AGM on Friday October 22nd. As well as our usual informal squash section AGM, it looks like we've got an exhibition match to savour. I asked Tom Phipps, our county champion for the last 5 years, to find an opponent he can't beat - and he has! More details with the formal AGM notice in due course.
