CHESHAM BOIS JUNIOR OPEN TOURNAMENT 2004

A Winning Week for Chesham Bois Juniors at Open Tournament

Winning 5 titles outright (3 singles and 2 doubles) and sharing in two others, the 2004 Open Junior tournament has proved to be the most successful ever for the host club in the 26 year history of this event. This important tournament, part of the Sunday Telegraph and Center Parcs LTA Grand Prix, also saw success for other Bucks’ clubs with winners from Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross Bull Lane, Halton and Stony Stratford.

The under18 and under16 boys singles were both contested by the Ben Pritchard (Essex) and Simon Baker (Berks).  In the first of the two events the under16’s Simon overcame Ben in 3 tightly fought sets of the highest quality where the stroke play, flair, athleticism and tactical awareness give real hope for the future of British tennis.  In another fine contest, Ben put aside his disappointment to produce two excellent sets to take the under18 title.

The Chesham Bois Finalists

with their trophies

The winners of the under 14 and under 12 boys singles proved too strong for their respective opponents Adam Hunt (Surrey) defeating Daniel Scholfield (Gerrards Cross Bull Lane) 6-2, 6-1 and Jack Shiel overpowering Reeves Lyndon 6-2, 6-0 in an all Halton final.

The under10 boys’ singles saw a real tussle between Milton Keynes’s Akash Kansagra and Chesham Bois’s Christian Slater.  The match was characterised by Akash’s aggression and Christian dogged defence, which brought him a match point in the tiebreak before victory finally went to Akash 15-13.

In the girls events Sarah Burrows gained a walkover in the under18 singles over due her opponent succumbing to flu.  Victoria Watson completed a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 over Hannah Pickford for the under16 title and Halton’s Lereesa Easterbook having won the first set 6-4 ran away with second 6-0 to defeat her club mate Emilia Osborne in the under 14 final.

The under12 and under10 events saw triumphs for the home club. In the under12 Vanessa Maloney having taken the first set 6-2 had to dig deep at 3-5 down in the second and produce her most aggressive tennis to take the set and the match 7-5.  Alex Clark had the privilege of taking the first honours of the day with her 4-2, 5-3 victory over Bull Lane’s Emily Graham in the under10 final.

In the doubles events the pick of the matches was the under18 boy’s contest.   This saw Simon Baker and Marcus Willis survive a match point to win the second set tiebreak only to be rather overpowered 6-1 in the third by the volleying performance of the Cambridge pair of Andrew Brookes and Matthew Taylor.  The under18 mixed doubles was by contrast a one sided event with Beaconsfield’s Andrew Johnson and Neesha Mehta running out 6-2, 6-1 winners over Jack Slaughter (Gerrards Cross Bull Lane) and Shalina Mehta (Beaconsfield) .

Further titles for Chesham Bois came in the boys doubles events.  Jonathon Maloney joined up with Bull Lane’s Daniel Schofield to defeat the Maidenhead pair Kieren Muir & Matthew Cousins 6-4, 6-4 for the U14 title and Adam Jones and Toby Martin were fought all the way in two tight 7-5, 7-5 sets by the Bull Lane pairing of Jonathan Maunder & Charlie Clarke.

Vanessa Maloney and singles opponent Sarah Spanswick teamed up for the under 12 Girls Doubles and proved too strong for the younger Chesham Pair of Alex Clark and Laura Deigman winning 6-1, 6-1.

Fittingly the final event was an all Chesham Bois match where the brother and sister team of Jonathan and Vanessa Maloney overcame some stubborn resistance of Toby Martin and Laura Deigman to win the U14 mixed doubles 6-4, 6-3.

The Gill Nunn special award to girls for sportsmanship and endeavour was given

Alex Clark . The boy’s equivalent, the Stackhouse trophy, went to Christian Slater and the Schweppes Trophy for the most successful Chesham Bois player was won by Vanessa Maloney.

Once again huge thanks must go to the tournament referee Sarah Tricks and her team on whom so much depends, to Karen Burrows, whose management skills will be sorely missed in future years and to Mary Crowshaw and all the catering volunteers who made this such a successful and enjoyable week.
