| CHESHAM BOIS JUNIOR OPEN TOURNAMENT 2005 Another Record Year for the Host Club and the Tournament A week of changeable weather including a showery finals day did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the record 230 entrants to the ever-popular Chesham Bois Open Junior Tournament, an important Grade 3 Ranking Event, part of Sunday Telegraph and Center Parcs Junior Grand Prix This year the host club had 26 entrants and ended the week with a record equalling 6 titles. Laura Deigman and Toby Martin leading the way, both winning 3 events, for which they also shared the Schweppes Trophy awarded to the most successful Chesham Bois Player. The U18 Boys Singles was for the first two sets a very hard fought battle with Michael Hayes (Wayfarers) coming back in the first set from 2-5 down to lead 6-5 only to lose it on a tiebreak. He then took the second set 6-4 only to have Matthew Brooklyn (Esporta) completely dominate the deciding set taking it to love. The UI6 and U14 matches were both closely contested matches of the highest quality with Marcus Willis (Berkshire) beating Robert Mariconda (Halton) 7-6, 6-4 and Haveer Bhalla of GX Bull line overcoming Robert Mariconda (Halton) 7-6, 6-3 In the U12’s Chesham Bois’ Toby Martin fought back from behind to take the first set 7-5 and then, having been pulled back from 3-0 to 3-3 in the second set, broke again, hung on to his own serve in a very long game and then broke again to secure the victory. In the U10 having raced through the first set, the second proved a much tougher affair Dean Kelleher (Halton) finally won through 4-0,5-4 In the girl’s event the majority of the matches were relatively straightforward for the winners, Amanda Carrera (Halton) winning the U18 against Cara Alexander (Gosling) without the loss of a game, Holly Hoare (Oxford Sports) beating Charlotte Ames (Winchester) 6-2, 6-1 Laura Deigman (Chesham Bois) defeating Shona Young (Maidenhead) 6-2, 6-0 and U10 Alice Patch (Halton) beating Liberty Crawford (Aylesbury) 4-0,4-1. The exception was the U16 final that proved to be a match of swinging fortunes with Louis Laciny (Queenswood) finally defeating Nadine Stewart (Westway) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. The doubles events saw some further fine tennis with the home club winning 4 titles, the Girls U14 where Vanessa Maloney, who had suffered an injury at a crucial stage of her singles match teamed up with Sarah Spanswick, the Girls U12 won by the Chesham Bois pair of Alex Clark and Laura Deigman, The boys U12 Adam Jones and Toby Clark and the Mixed U14, Laura Deigman and Toby Martin. The tournament also saw Isabel Maloney taking her first step in following her elder siblings by winning the U10 plate whilst only 8. Underlining the friendly atmosphere at this tournament are the awards for outstanding sportsmanship, the Stackhouse Trophy (Boys) and Gill Nunn Special Award (Girls) that this year went to Marcus Willis and Rebecca Tricks. Keith Dewick, Chairman of Bucks LTA, presented the prizes. Tournaments are a huge logistical exercise even without the intervention of the weather and huge thanks to Allison Maloney and her army of volunteers who somehow managed to keep up with the seemingly insatiable appetites of young tennis players and also to Sarah Tricks the unflappable tournament referee and her team. |
