| 29th CHESHAM BOIS JUNIOR OPEN TOURNAMENT 2007 Chesham Bois LTC 29th annual Open Junior Tennis Tournament ended on schedule and in glorious sunshine after a week when the elements and major pile on the M40 threatened to bring it to a halt. Bank holiday Monday was a day of high winds and continuous heavy rain and much credit goes to both the organisers and the players for battling the elements to get through 80% of the scheduled matches. After some respite on Tuesday the dreadful weather returned on Wednesday and we a grateful to Halton for the use of their indoor and outdoor facilities to keep the tournament on track. Then, on Thursday, to add insult to injury a major accident on the M40 unavoidable delayed the arrival of many of the competitors and caused major rescheduling exercise to be undertaken. This year, the Grade 3 Ranking tournament had its stature further recognised as it joins the elite events that are pre-qualifiers for Ariel British Junior National Championships. It is part of the Sunday Telegraph and Center Parcs Grand Prix supported by the LTA with top players hoping to win circuit points to compete in La Manga Spain at the Grand Prix finals in November. The tennis was of the highest standard and happily this was matched by the general level of sportsmanship. From the perspective of Buckinghamshire clubs the increased importance of the tournament in the junior calendar inevitably made it more difficult to achieve success, with Laura Deigman of Chesham Bois being the only local winner of a singles title. In the doubles pride was somewhat recovered with wins in U12 Boys doubles by Dean Kelleher & Michael Patch of Halton, Laura Deigman and Romilly Smith in U14 Girls Doubles, Harriet Dart and Alice Patch (Halton) in U12 Girls Doubles and success in both mixed events. In the U18s the Gerrards Cross Bull Lane pair of Georgina Kilbourn & Joel Girling beat Laura Birmingham & Will Chapman of Chesham Bois and the U14 final was an all Halton affair with Dean Kelleher & Alex Clarke defeating Alice and Michael Patch The Schweppes Award for the Chesham Bois player playing progressing furthest in the tournament was won for the second year in succession by Laura Deigman. The Awards for sportsmanship and general behaviour where presented to Katrina Smith (Gill Nunn Trophy) and Angus McCaul (Stackhouse Trophy). Again a huge vote of thanks is due to the Junior Tournament committee headed by the indefatigable Alison Maloney, the Tournament Referee Sarah Tricks ably supported by her assistant Sheila Smith and of course all the volunteers who provide the continuous supply of catering required to satisfy the needs of the ever hungry competitors.
