LTA Meritorious Service Award given to member Ann Dewick

Many Congratulations to Ann Dewick

Ann DewickChesham Bois Lawn Tennis and Squash Club are celebrating Ann Dewick being given the highly prestigious LTA Meritorious Service Award.  The presentation was made by David Rawlinson Deputy President on 17th May at the LTA’s AGM in the National Tennis Centre Roehampton.

She joined Chesham Bois in 1964 and over the years has won a good number of club singles and doubles titles, as well as the club’s mixed doubles title, partnering Keith. They were also often victorious at the Veterans’ Bucks County Closed and in the Aylesbury & District Tennis League Tournaments. She continues to play for various teams at the Club and has represented Buckinghamshire at every seniors age group from the over 40s, captaining the 50s, 60s, 65s, 70s and 75s and has no desire to stop!

Ann began playing tennis when she was 10 and her love of the game has never wavered. By 15 she was regularly competing in tournaments and represented the Hertfordshire junior County team. She played at junior Wimbledon and won a round in both the singles and doubles. Ann went on to play for Hertfordshire in the Senior County Hard Court Singles Championship. She met her husband Keith while both were working for Barclays Bank and while there won the Bank’s national championships title a few times adding to her trophy cabinet.

Ever keen to encourage young players, Ann and Keith launched the very popular Chesham Bois Junior Tournament 1977 and Ann continues to be involved to this day.  Following this she started to referee more, including the Bucks County Closed with Keith, and assisted him with several LTA tournaments, including the Over 35s Inter-County Championships, Group 1 County Cup, Group 1 18&U and National Veterans (Seniors) Championships. She continues to act as Assistant Referee at the Bucks Junior County Closed.

She joined the British Women’s Tennis Association and ran the junior tournaments and housewives’ tournaments for several years. She also ran and refereed short tennis tournaments (and subsequently mini tennis tournaments) across the County and beyond.

Ann has now refereed for 40 years and shows no sign of stopping. She was the Bucks Tennis Wimbledon Ticket Co-ordinator for 40 years with Keith, retiring in 2016. She has worked on the Players’ Desk at Wimbledon for over 20 years and has assisted with the County and District Leagues for even longer.

Ann supported Keith in various roles he undertook on behalf of Bucks Tennis (including Secretary, Chairman and President), as Chairman of the Aylesbury & District Tennis League for 49 years, Chairman of the National Four Nations Committee and Chairman and President of the United Banks Tennis Association.

Ann, who had already been awarded Lifetime Membership of Chesham Bois LT&SC was recently made a Vice-President of Bucks Tennis. She has often said that her proudest moment in tennis was when Keith was honoured with his LTA Meritorious Service Award. They had always considered their tennis career as a partnership and she was proud that their work was recognised by the LTA. Sadly Keith died in 2017 but you can be sure that he would have been equally proud of the well-deserved recognition that Ann has received for all that she has given to the game she loves.
