Last week the 1A boys managed to suffer a heavy loss despite coming close to winning the match. Ever keen to surpass their more established club colleagues, 1B managed to do the same this week, but showed true class to turn potential victory into even more comprehensive defeat than 1A managed.
Missing Phil Taylor, Tim King and contract rebel Simon Ross (now out with a mystery injury…) the 1B squad had an unfamiliar look as they welcomed back former superstar Mike Thorpe and Mavericks’ captain Ben Boulter for his second appearance of the season.
First up at 4 came Ben Boulter. The D2 iceman won his previous match for 1B and put in another fine performance this time against a very experienced D1 opponent in Francis Sancisi. Each game was nip and tuck but Ben was unfortunate to be on the wrong side of three tie-breaks. 12-10, 12-10, 12-10 to Uxbridge. Next up captain Rob Parry against fitness fanatic Tom Chambers and Steve Sieff against veteran Mike McLaughlin. Rob battled throughout but very similar to Ben was on the wrong side of a 9-11, 9-11, 10-12 scoreline. So 6-0 to Uxbridge despite a gap of 12 points between the teams. Meanwhile on court 4 the encounter was anything but close as Mike gave Steve a lesson in controlled simple squash, running through the CBLTSC number 2 without ever looking remotely troubled. If that wasn’t bad enough, James Pearson made it to 7-9 in his encounter before a groin injury forced him to withdraw. So four matches played and no points to CBLTSC. Over to Mike Thorpe to rescue some pride. There was always going to be some rust for the big man to blow off, but the Thorpedo was far too good for his opponent and rescued 3 points in a 3-0 victory. Welcome back Mike!
The season rolls on towards its conclusion with only a handful of matches to play, and what looks like it might be a tense finish for teams scrapping towards the bottom of the table.
