Men’s team squash – Week 2 report

The season is in full swing now with all teams now having played at least
once. This week the Div 2 Tuesday night matches saw the Seniors travel to
Beaconsfield Bulls and the Juniors entertain Holmer Green 2s. Close matches
continue to be the theme of CBLTSC squash with both sides going down 3-2.

Phil ‘never say die’ Cornhill produced another epic comeback performance at
1 for the Seniors to see off a bewildered Kevin Mears 3-2 (10-9 in the
fifth). Phil ended up winning the match with 43 points won to Kevin’s 44. A
proper nail biter. Tim Paul closed out his first win of the season 3-1 at 3
and Rob Ballingall and Simon Brown both suffered fifth game defeats, the
chairman’s second narrow loss in a row.

Meanwhile the Juniors were also engaged in a tight one back at home. Their
two wins came from team veteran (can the Juniors have a veteran?) Tim
Leslie-Smith with a convincing 3-1 victory and genuine junior Amy ‘pure
class’ Jones with a dominant 3-0. Her opponent Trevor Howes was quick to
complement the young starlet on her impeccable squash. In case you didn’t
already know, young Amy is one to watch! With the Riddall’s both producing
wins last week in Div 1 and Amy this week in Div 2, a special mention should
go to John Ormiston’s flourishing CBLTSC academy.

Wednesday saw the two Div 1 sides in action, 1a at home to Beaconsfield
Lions and 1b away to Beaconsfield Tigers. Beaconsfield made it a hatrick of
wins over CBLTSC this week, 1a going down 3-2 in another close battle and 1b
taking a bit of a pounding in a 5-0 shutout. Credit to 1b’s Rob Parry at 4
and Simon Ross at 5 for their performances when unwell in 2-3 defeats to Dan
Fernandez and Jimmy Harrington respectively. For 1a Will Gardner got his
first victory 3-1 vs Mark Treadwell at 3 and making his first appearance for
1a this season, Chris Wildman recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Toby
Johnson. Credit also to Sam Pothecary for his performance at 1 vs East of
England O40 champion Mike McLaughlin and captain Dan Colquhoun who went down
11-8 in the fifth to Simon Rodwell at 2. Sam in particular is showing that
he can be a genuine force at the top end of the division.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sunday saw the Seniors and the Juniors go at it
again in one of the Div 2 derbies. Early bragging rights to the Juniors who
got the first CBLTSC Div 2 victory of the season 4-1 over the Seniors.
Victories for Andy Piper at 1, Tom Ormiston at 2, Simon Clark at 3 and Ben
Boulter with his first CBLTSC victory at 5. Pete Smith responded for the
Seniors at 4 in a five game thriller with Tim Leslie-Smith.

Thanks to all captains for their reports and to all the club members who
have come out to support. Please keep coming, in these close matches a bit
of home support can really make a difference!

Next week sees:
Tuesday 14/10/14 – Upstarts v Beaconsfield Bears
