Following last week’s disappointing ‘hampered by injury’ defeat to the CB Mavericks, the Seniors played away to the newly promoted Beaconsfield Trojans.
Richard was up first, just missing out on victory to Jo who showed exquisite touches at the front of the court. Andy was on next against Androp and after going 1 game down and 8-0 down, engineered a remarkable turn-around winning that game 10-8 and the following 2 games to comfortably win 3-1. Ed was up next playing new Beaconsfield recruit Matt at 3. His opponent shot out of the starting blocks and won the first playing multiple winners. However, un-phased by this, Steady Eddy set about the task of playing himself back into the match and slowly but surely won the next 3 games with a great display of nigh on error free mixed shots and using his slow lobs to great effect. Simon went on at 2nd string to pretty much dominate his opponent Nick with a great running game and a few shots thrown in here and there. Everything was looking rosy and chickens were in danger of being counted until disaster struck midway through the 3rd, when a pulled hamstring ended his contest. It appears that injury will continue to be a common theme among the venerables. Thus, with 2 wins a-piece, the overall match result fell upon the No.1 strings and it was looking pretty bleak as Neil H got off to his traditional slow start against Greg, narrowly losing the first 2 games. However through gritted teeth and sheer determination Neil won the third 9-7. The next two games had it all with some cracking winners, great rallies and players falling over at full stretch. Despite a couple of seriously dubious decisions which drew vocal responses from the balcony and Greg suffering from cramp in the final moments of the match, Neil kept his composure and concentration and emerged a worthy winner thus securing the Seniors’ first win of the season 17-10.
