The start of October 2014 marked a significant week in the life of CBLTSC squash with the launch of the free squash ball trial period and team squash kicking off this week with three close matches involving CBLTSC 1a, Seniors and Upstarts.
In div 2 the Seniors kicked the season off with a narrow loss to WSRC 2 at home. Impressive wins for Phil Cornhill at 1 and returning hip replacee Chris Jordan at 5 balanced out by defeats for Tim Paul and Pete Smith. Special mention for Rob Ballingall’s match which could have gone either way, the chairman eventually just missing out 10-8 in the fifth.
Staying in div 2, a much changed Upstarts squad also got off to a creditable defeat against the RAF at home with notable wins for team squash novice Alex Pritchard at 4 (3-0) and late stand in Richard Harvey at 5. The club captain had his normal struggle finding somewhere to park, but managed to overcome that frustration to put in a dominant 3-0 performance. With defeats for Simon Ackers at 2 and Chris Wildman at 1, the match was ultimately again decided on a close five setter, with Phil Williams just missing out at 3.
Team performance of the week undoubtedly goes to the 1a squad. They got their season underway away against newcomers Aylesbury Grammar. Missing two regulars, captain Colquhoun must have feared the worst on learning that the new boys were able to field CBLTSC club champion Charlie Yerrell at 3, CBLTSC vets champion Darren Withey at 4 and long time CBLTSC ladies champion Sam Mueller at 5! Despite those odds the reigning league champions showed what they are made of with 3-2 wins for Owen Riddall at 1, Sam Pothecary at 2 and Huw Riddall at 5 and narrow defeats for the captain at 3 and Will Gardner at 4.
Congratulations to all involved for some great squash. 1b squad and Juniors begin next week…
